I am going to talk about those here. If in the unfortunate event that your Windows cannot even boot, I will also give you some tips on doing Windows XP software repair with that method.

If you are able to boot your Windows, you can do Windows XP software repair by first making sure any spyware, viruses or Trojan horses are removed. You can use free tools such as Windows Defender, AVG or Avast antivirus to scan and clean up your system. You can also do Windows XP software repair by repairing your Windows registry. Repairing Windows registry is known to remove errors and improve performance of Windows XP.

If your Windows cannot boot, make sure that it is not due to hardware failure. A few hardware problems can cause the system to be unable to boot. RAM (memory), motherboard or hard disk failure are the common causes. If your hardware is faulty, you will not even be able to boot using the XP CD.

If you can boot using XP CD, doing Windows XP software repair is very straight forward. However, there are a few things you should know before doing Windows XP software repair using XP CD:

1. The XP repair process should retain your personal data.

2. If you are using a SCSI or SATA hard disk, you need the driver for it in a floppy disk format. Things can get a little tricky if you do not have the driver in floppy disk or you have no floppy drive at all. An alternative will be to create an XP CD that is integrated with the SATA/SCSI driver. You can do so with a great and free tool known as nLite. Do a search on Google and read documentations on it for detailed instructions.

3. Make sure that your PC's BIOS is set to boot using CD first before using your hard disk to boot. Most BIOS now come with a boot menu that you can call out by pressing some function keys. For Dell PCs, I think it's F12 when the PC is powered on. From the menu, you can select to boot from CD/DVD Drive. If there is no menu for you to call out, enter the BIOS and set the boot priority for your CD/DVD drive to be higher than your hard disk. Usually, the DEL key or the F1 key is used to enter BIOS when the computer starts.

4. After you have done Windows XP software repair, the XP updates that you have installed will be removed. All drivers will be reverted to the original XP versions in the CD. You may have to reactivate your XP as well. It is important to note that you cannot repair an XP Pro with XP Home CD. You can however repair an XP Pro with newer versions of XP Pro. For example, repairing XP SP1 with XP SP2 CD.

Hard Drive Repair Using Free Software

Contrary to popular belief, if a computer does not boot due to hard drive corruption all data is not lost and the hard drive may even be repairable. There are 2 types of hard drive damage. One is fixable by you and the other requires a professional data recovery facility.

Physical Drive Damage - Physical damage is the worst. Data recovery can only be done by professionals and can cost up to ,500 (sometimes higher). Physical damage usually consists of bad actuator arms, damaged platters or fried controller cards.

Non-Physical Drive Damage - Non-Physical damage (NPD) is what we're going to be discussing in this article. NPD occurs when the operating system's file system (fat or ntfs) gets corrupted due to an improper shutdown (for example). While this damage is may seem really bad (if it's preventing you from booting your PC), it's easily fixable with some software that's already including in any Windows PC and a USB external hard drive enclosure.

Hard Drive Repair Using Free Software

Here are a list of items that you'll need to follow the instructions below:

Another working computer with Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7
Find out what kind of hard drive you have. There are 2 types. SATA (small flat connector) and PATA (a.k.a IDE) which has a connector with about 30 pins. An external USB hard drive enclosure with a connector for the type of drive you're going to be connecting to it (you can grab one of these at BestBuy for about USD).

Please follow the steps below to perform a non-physical repair (software repair) on a non-bootable hard drive.

1. Take the drive out of the computer.
2. Connect the hard drive to the connector on the USB enclosure.
3. Connect a USB cable from the enclosure to the computer that's working.
4. Power on the USB enclosure.
5. An external drive will probably load in your list of available hard drives. You can see this list by opening "My Computer" or "Computer". Take note of the drive letter for the external hard drive.
6. Now it's time to load a program called CHKDSK (Check Disk).
7. Click Start (if you're on Windows XP) or click the Windows globe (on the bottom left for Vista and Windows 7).
8. On Windows XP click RUN, then type CMD. On Windows Vista and 7 type CMD where it says "Search Programs and Files". This will open a black command prompt window.
9. In the command prompt type chkdsk "the drive letter you want to check": /r and press enter. So here is an example chkdsk g: /r then press the enter key.
10. This process can take hours. I've had a few that took days.
11. If this command completes successfully your drive should be repaired enough for you to recover the data from it and you might actually be able to boot from it again.

A word of warning. If your drive ever has any errors on it (bad sectors) it's reached the end of it's life and should be replaced ASAP. You'll be able to see this in the report provided to by the chkdsk command at the end of it's scan.

How To Fix "Reload Software 507" Error On Your BlackBerry

So this should be a quickie. At a recent client's place I encountered an error that happened when I tried to update her BlackBerry Storm for the first time in a LONG time. It was the dreaded "Reload Software 507" error...or just "507" which shows up on others.

Here is the setup so that if you happened to do the exact same thing, the solution will be fully applicable. The solution, however, works for all other BlackBerrys... (or is it blackberries? Anybody know the plural version of a BlackBerry?):
Installed Desktop Manager from BlackBerry's website After installation, innocently plugged in the BlackBerry Casually chatted with the client while it connected and prompted me to update the apps, firmware, and OS FORTUNATELY, when asked to backup BlackBerry first, I said OK. (Never deny backups!) BlackBerry backs up New BB software downloads from the web Two-thirds of the way through the backup, for some inexplicable reason, it crashes "Reload Software 507" error shows up and the BlackBerry has turned itself into a pricey brick.

Oh no! What to do! Number one thing to NEVER do in any situation IN LIFE is PANIC. I don't remember a situation ever where panicking was ever a good thing. (Thinks back to vehicular accidents survived...)

How To Fix "Reload Software 507" Error On Your BlackBerry

Ok, here's the solution (Why beat around the bush? You just want your BB back right?): [NOTE: It's essential that the solution is performed in the order listed...why? Because it won't work otherwise...trust me.]
Unplug the BB in current brick form Go into your Desktop Manager settings and make sure that it isn't configured to back up upon syncing. (Why? because if you don't, the minute your BB is back online, it can potentially copy over all your backed up data...then you're really USCWAP) Your BB should still be showing that annoying error on the screen. Get rid of it by taking out the battery. Now...with the battery still out of your BB, plug it into your computer. Depending on your OS, it will either recognize it right away and restore applications, or it will (as it was in my case) not do anything because I was on a Mac. Let it "steep" for a bit if you are on a Mac and stare at the lovely no battery icon that shows up when you have it plugged in. After you are sufficiently satisfied that nothing more is going to happen, insert the battery without disconnecting the connection. Now watch the magic happen...the software will state the obvious and tell you that there is no OS present and will prompt you to choose which OS you wish to install. I chose the recommended latest one. The re-installation of the BB OS should occur at this point. If it doesn't? Re-do this whole process again. I would say that after 3 or 4 times, if it STILL doesn't work, then your BB is pretty messed up and you should probably just get a new one...

Epilogue:

After you are done restoring the OS or restoring the upgraded OS, you will notice that you have NOTHING on it in terms of your settings and data. AGAIN, DON'T PANIC! What did we say about that?

Instead, plug the BB back (hopefully you didn't re-configure it to automatically backup yet...if so, turn it back off and stop jumping the gun!) and once the BB is recognized, click on the Restore icon. You will then be asked to choose what file to use to restore and there should be the one you just backed up everything on. Do so and enjoy your BB again!

So hopefully you were able to restore your BlackBerry back from the dreaded "Reload Software 507" Error. Good luck!
